Korean skincare earned a reputation for being complicated, and the famous "ten-step routine" is mostly to blame. In practice, almost nobody in Korea does ten steps every day. What they do follow is an order — and once you understand the logic behind it, you can build a routine of four steps or nine and it will still work.
Here is the rule that governs the whole thing: apply products from thinnest to thickest. A watery toner cannot get through a face cream, but a cream sits happily on top of a toner. Everything else follows from that.
The morning routine
1. Gentle cleanse
Your skin has done nothing overnight but sit against a pillow. A light water-based cleanse is plenty — no need for oil or double cleansing in the morning. Skip harsh foaming washes that leave skin tight.
2. Toner
Korean toners are not the stripping, alcohol-heavy astringents many of us grew up with. They are hydrating, and their job is to prep damp skin so the next layers absorb properly. The Anua Heartleaf 77% Clear Pads are a popular shortcut here — toner and a light exfoliating sweep in one.
3. Essence or serum
This is where you treat whatever your actual concern is. Brightening, texture, redness, fine lines — pick one or two actives and stay consistent. The COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence is the gateway product for most people because it is hydrating and calming without being fussy. If uneven tone is your concern, niacinamide is the workhorse.
4. Moisturiser
Lighter in the morning than at night. If your skin is reactive or often flushed, a calming cream like Anua Heartleaf 70% Intense Calming Cream does double duty.
5. Sunscreen — the step that matters most
If you do one thing from this entire article, do this one. Every brightening serum and anti-ageing cream you own is undone by unprotected sun exposure, and in Cyprus that exposure is year-round, not just July.
Korean sunscreens are the reason many people convert to K-beauty at all — they are cosmetically elegant in a way Western formulas historically were not. The Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cream SPF50+ leaves no white cast, and the Abib Quick Sunstick is the practical answer to reapplying over makeup during the day.
The evening routine
1. Oil cleanse
Sunscreen, makeup and the day's sebum are oil-soluble. Water-based cleansers do not remove them properly, which is why so many people who "wash their face" still break out. Start with a cleansing oil or balm on dry skin, massage, then add water to emulsify.
The Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil and the Beauty of Joseon Radiance Cleansing Balm are the two we recommend most often.
2. Water-based cleanse
The second half of the double cleanse. This removes sweat, dirt and whatever the oil cleanser lifted. If you are acne-prone, a salicylic acid cleanser earns its place here.
3. Exfoliate — but only two or three nights a week
This is the step people overdo. Chemical exfoliants (AHA, BHA, PHA) are more effective and less damaging than scrubs, but more is not better. Two to three times weekly is the ceiling for most skin. If your skin starts stinging when you apply anything, you have overdone it — stop for a week.
4. Toner, essence, serum
Same principle as the morning, thinnest first. Night is when retinol belongs if you use it — on the nights you are not exfoliating. Anua Nano Retinol 0.3% is a sensible starting strength.
5. Sheet mask (optional, 1–2 times a week)
The step that made K-beauty famous. It is not essential, but it is a genuinely effective hydration boost. The BIODANCE Bio-Collagen Real Deep Mask is worn overnight and has become the single most requested mask we stock.
6. Moisturiser or sleeping mask
Richer than your daytime cream. This seals everything underneath in.
A realistic starter routine
If the above still feels like a lot, this is the version we give people who are starting from nothing:
- Morning: rinse with water → moisturiser → sunscreen
- Evening: cleansing oil → gentle cleanser → one serum → moisturiser
Five products. Do that consistently for two months and your skin will be in better shape than it would be with twelve products used sporadically. Add a step only when you have a specific reason to.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I wait between steps?
Long enough that the previous layer is no longer wet to the touch — usually 30 seconds to a minute. You do not need to wait for full absorption. The exception is sunscreen: give it a couple of minutes to set before makeup.
Do I really need both a toner and an essence?
No. Plenty of Korean routines use one hydrating product between cleansing and moisturiser. If your skin is dry, layering both helps; if it is oily, it may not.
Can I mix Korean and Western skincare?
Yes. The order rule applies regardless of where the product was made. The only real caution is layering multiple strong actives — retinol, high-percentage vitamin C and acids — on the same night.
How long before I see results?
Hydration improves within days. Texture and tone take six to twelve weeks, because that is roughly how long skin cell turnover takes. Anything promising faster than that is describing surface effects.
Where do I start if I have no idea what my skin needs?
Start with a cleanser, a moisturiser and a sunscreen from our Korean skincare collection, and add one treatment product after a month once you can see what your skin is actually doing.
