Frizz happens when water vapour from the air gets into the hair fibre, swells it, and pushes the cuticle scales open. The fix is to keep moisture in the hair and humid air out — a smoothing shampoo, a leave-in that forms a film, and a clarifying wash every few weeks to lift the mineral build-up that hard Cypriot water leaves behind.
That last part is what most frizz advice misses, and here it matters more than the weather does.
Why does hair frizz in the first place?
Each hair is wrapped in overlapping cuticle scales, like roof tiles. When they lie flat, hair looks smooth and reflects light. When water vapour passes through them into the inner cortex, the fibre swells, the tiles lift, and individual hairs push away from their neighbours instead of lying alongside them. That is frizz — not dryness exactly, but uneven water uptake.
Which is why frizz is worst on hair that is already damaged. Bleach, heat and chemical straightening erode the cuticle, and a cuticle with gaps lets water in faster and less evenly. The same humid morning that leaves healthy hair slightly fuller leaves bleached hair standing up in sections.
Why is frizz worse in Cyprus than the forecast suggests?
Hard water. Published figures put Cypriot tap water at roughly 250–400 ppm calcium carbonate across most districts — "very hard" on any scale, thanks to the island's limestone geology and the remineralising of desalinated supply. Calcium and magnesium bind to the hair surface and to the surfactants in your shampoo, leaving a fine mineral residue. Hair feels rough, shampoo lathers less, and the cuticle never fully lies flat. Over months this drives more frizz than any single humid day.
Coastal humidity. Nicosia is dry; Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos are not. If your hair behaves inland and misbehaves at home, that is the explanation.
Air conditioning. AC dehumidifies. Hair sitting in conditioned air all day loses water, then grabs it back the moment you step outside. That swing is what produces frizz by late afternoon — and people blame the heat rather than the office.
Sea and chlorine. Salt draws water out of the fibre; chlorine oxidises the cuticle. Both raise porosity, and porosity is what makes humidity bite. If you swim regularly, start with our guide to undoing sun, salt and chlorine damage.
How do I tell whether my frizz is dryness or damage?
Mist a dry, product-free section with water and watch for ten seconds. If the droplets bead on the surface, your cuticle is intact and the frizz is environmental — a sealing leave-in will handle it. If the water vanishes almost instantly, the cuticle is porous and you need repair alongside smoothing.
Then stretch a damp hair between two fingers. Healthy hair stretches a little and springs back. Hair that stretches a long way and stays stretched, or snaps, is damaged, and no anti-frizz product will hold it smooth for long — bond repair comes first, which we compare in Olaplex vs K18. Ignore the test where you drop a hair in a glass of water to see if it floats: surface tension and product residue swamp the result.
Which anti-frizz ingredients actually do what?
Anti-frizz products use one of two opposite strategies, and knowing which is the most useful thing when choosing one.
| Mechanism | Typical ingredients | What it does | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silicone film | Amodimethicone, phenyl trimethicone, dimethicone | Deposits a water-repellent layer that slows vapour moving in and out | Humid, coastal, long days outdoors |
| Silicone-free film | Hydrolyzed soy or wheat protein, plant butters | Coats more lightly; washes out faster, builds up less | Fine hair, or if silicones leave your hair limp |
| Oil seal | Argan, coconut and other plant oils | Fills surface gaps, adds shine, partly water-repellent | Coarse, thick, dry hair; mid-lengths and ends |
| Humectant | Glycerin, sodium hyaluronate | Binds water inside the fibre so it stops recruiting it from the air | Dry indoor air, winter, heavy AC use |
| Chelation | EDTA and similar sequestrants in clarifying shampoos | Lifts calcium and magnesium deposits left by hard water | Every 2–4 weeks in Cyprus, whatever else you use |
The practical catch: a humectant-heavy leave-in can work against you on a muggy coastal day, because you have applied something whose job is to attract water in an environment full of it. Film-formers are the safer default here; humectants earn their place indoors and in winter.
What should I use if my hair is fine?
Fine hair flattens under anything heavy, so the product has to work in a thin layer.
DAVINES Love Smoothing Lightweight Milk 150ml is formulated specifically for fine to medium frizz-prone hair: 10 to 15 sprays on towel-dried hair, combed through, then blow-dried. Davines states up to 72 hours of frizz control and heat protection to 230°C, and credits regenerative apple pulp extract for holding moisture in the fibre.
KERASTASE Gloss Absolu Frizz-Glaze Cream 240ml is the silicone-free option, built on hydrolyzed soy protein; Kérastase claims up to four days of control. Worth trying if silicones have made your hair heavy or dull in the past.
MOROCCANOIL Smoothing Lotion sits between a conditioner and a styler — argan oil and argan butter, with enough flexible control to tame flyaways without stiffness. Good on air-drying days.
What should I use if my hair is thick or coarse?
Coarse hair carries far more product, and generally needs to.
DAVINES Love Smoothing Serum 150ml is the same range as the Lightweight Milk in a richer formula for thick, coarse strands — 7 to 15 pumps root to ends before blow-drying, with the same 72-hour and 230°C figures from Davines.
KERASTASE Discipline Maskératine 200ml is a weekly rinse-off mask using amodimethicone and hydrolyzed wheat protein to coat lengths and ends: five minutes on washed, towel-dried hair, then emulsify with water and rinse. It contains silicones and wheat protein — check the list if you are sensitive. DAVINES Love Smoothing Mask is the cheaper weekly alternative; Davines reports up to 2.4x smoother hair as part of the full routine.
KERASTASE Discipline L'Huile Oléo-Relax 75ml is an oil-and-silicone leave-in including coconut oil. A very small amount on damp or dry ends — it will drag fine hair down.
Does my shampoo matter, or only the leave-in?
It matters, for a reason unrelated to the word "smoothing" on the bottle: harsh cleansing raises the cuticle, and a raised cuticle frizzes.
DAVINES LOVE Smoothing Shampoo with LOVE Smoothing Conditioner is the best-stocked pairing we carry, and the conditioner needs only 30 seconds. KERASTASE Discipline Bain Fluidéaliste Gentle is the gentler alternative — Kérastase describes it as sulfate-free, worth knowing if your scalp reacts to standard surfactants. The full range is in Kérastase Discipline.
And because of the water here: clarify every two to four weeks to lift mineral deposits. Not every wash, which strips the hair — but often enough that build-up never establishes.
Do I still need heat protection if I use a smoothing leave-in?
Yes, if you use straighteners or a high-heat dryer. Some leave-ins double up — Davines rates both the Milk and the Serum to 230°C — but a dedicated product does it better. KERASTASE Discipline Fluidissime 150ml is both, using amodimethicone and phenyl trimethicone, with up to 72 hours of frizz control claimed by Kérastase.
Kérastase's own copy for the Gloss Absolu Anti-Frizz Glaze Milk 190ml says it is not a replacement for a dedicated heat protectant at very high temperatures — a usefully honest line, and one to take at face value. More in Heat Protection and Leave-In Conditioner.
What can anti-frizz products not do?
They cannot straighten your hair. Everything above works by coating the fibre, and coatings wash off. Nothing here changes the shape your hair grows in; persistently straight hair means heat styling — see our L'Oréal SteamPod guide — or a salon chemical service.
They cannot repair damage. They make damaged hair look better while they are on it, which is why results get shorter-lived as hair gets more porous.
And they cannot beat a genuinely extreme day. A still, humid August evening on the coast will push through any leave-in eventually. A realistic expectation is frizz appearing by evening instead of mid-morning, and brushing out rather than needing a rewash. The brand figures above — 72 hours, four days, 2.4x — are manufacturers' own, measured under their own conditions. Direction, not promise.
What does a frizz routine actually look like?
- Wash with a smoothing shampoo; swap in a clarifying one every two to four weeks.
- Condition every wash; mask weekly if your hair is coarse.
- Squeeze, don't rub. Towel friction lifts the cuticle — press with a microfibre towel or cotton t-shirt.
- Apply the leave-in to damp hair, not dry. The film forms as the hair dries, and that is what locks the cuticle down. Comb it through so it is even; patchy application is patchy frizz.
- Dry fully. Hair left half-dry in humid air keeps swelling.
- Leave it alone. Every touch, run-through and re-tie disturbs the film.

Frequently asked questions
Is frizzy hair the same as dry hair?
No. Dry hair lacks water or oil; frizzy hair takes on water unevenly. They often occur together, because a damaged cuticle both loses moisture quickly and absorbs it unevenly, but you can have frizzy hair that is not dry — and dry hair that stays smooth.
Can hard water in Cyprus cause frizz?
Yes, indirectly. Calcium and magnesium in hard water leave mineral deposits on the hair surface and reduce how well shampoo cleans. The cuticle stops lying flat, so hair feels rough and frizzes more readily. A clarifying shampoo every two to four weeks is the practical answer; a shower filter helps if you want to go further.
Should I use oil or cream for frizzy hair?
Cream or milk if your hair is fine or medium, oil if it is thick and coarse. Oils are heavier and more occlusive, so they seal effectively but flatten fine hair. Many people with coarse hair use both: a cream on damp hair, then a few drops of oil on the ends once dry.
Why does my hair frizz more after I straighten it?
Repeated high heat erodes the cuticle, and a more porous cuticle absorbs water faster. Straightening therefore makes the next humid day worse than the last. Always use a heat protectant, and keep the temperature as low as the result allows.
Does sleeping on silk reduce frizz?
It reduces mechanical frizz — the flyaways and roughness from friction against cotton overnight. It does nothing about humidity. Useful, modest, and not a substitute for a leave-in.
How often should I use a clarifying shampoo in Cyprus?
Every two to four weeks for most people. Weekly if your hair is very long, you swim often, or your home water is especially hard. Daily or near-daily clarifying strips the hair and makes frizz worse, not better.
